How to send a large file to a colleague without uploading it
By Thavasi · Updated 2 November 2026
A colleague asks for the video, the design files or the database export. It's 2 GB. Email refuses it, and uploading it to a drive just so they can download it again feels silly when they're sitting two desks away. Here are faster ways.
First: check your company's rules
Many companies have rules about where work files may go. If yours requires a specific tool (for example OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams), use it, especially for confidential files. The methods below are for files you're allowed to share directly.
Option 1: Directly from your browser
- Be on the same network Both laptops on the same Wi‑Fi, or one connected to the other's hotspot.
- Open wifloshare.com and choose the file A 6‑character code appears.
- Your colleague opens wifloshare.com They click Receive, type the code and click Download.
The file goes straight from your laptop to theirs, encrypted, without being stored on any server, and with no size limit. You can also share with several colleagues at once: they all use the same code.
Try it now: open wifloshare.com on both devices. It's free, with no sign-up and no size limit.
Open WifloShareOn office Wi‑Fi?
Office and guest Wi‑Fi networks often stop devices from talking to each other directly (it's a security setting called client isolation). If the transfer can't connect:
- Use a hotspot: turn on Mobile hotspot on one laptop (or a phone) and connect the other to it. The file still doesn't use your mobile data, because it goes directly between the two devices.
- Small files (up to 50 MB) go through WifloShare's backup relay automatically, even when the network blocks direct connections.
- See the troubleshooting guide if it still doesn't connect.
Other options
- Email: fine for small files. Gmail allows about 25 MB per email and Outlook about 20 MB; bigger files are turned into drive links.
- OneDrive, Google Drive or Teams: good for sharing with people elsewhere, or when a copy should stay in the company's storage. Big files take a while to upload.
- Pen drive: still works, but many offices block USB storage, and it's easy to forget the drive.
